6 cowboy
A man who is employed by a ranch to care for grazing cattle. The origin of the term is a matter of some discussion. The first cowboys of the American West were the Mexican vaqueros. It is likely that the term cowboy, like its synonym buckaroo, derived from vaquero. The fact that the earliest cowboys were the Mexican herders and that cowboy is so similar to vaquero in its formation lends credence to this theory. The use of "boy" in the term rather than "man" may be explained by the fact that it was originally used (before the Civil War) to refer only to young, inexperienced drovers who herded cattle. It may also have been a derisive or condescending term, similar to the use of 'boy' as a form of address (from whites to black males) in the Deep South. By the 1870s, cowboy became a general term to refer to anyone who tended cattle. Somewhat later (after the 1880s), the term came to connote a wild or uncouth individual. For instance, the Clanton gang, who battled the Earps, are sometimes referred to as such. The term cowboy has become widespread in English and is used extensively as an attributive adjective. Its usage today frequently connotes an impulsive individual who, through a show of force, attempts to resolve a conflict. -

One rather fanciful theory traces its origin to the Mexican-American War of 1846-48 and the song "Green Grow the Rushes-oh", supposedly sung by the American troops. According to another theory it is a corruption of griego or "Greek", in the sense of anything foreign and unintelligible, as in the English expression "it's all Greek to me".* * *I- ga adjetivoa) (AmL fam & pey) gringo, foreign ( of or relating to a gringo II a))b) (Andes fam) ( rubio) fair-hairedII- ga masculino, femeninoa) (AmL fam & pey) ( extranjero) gringo, foreigner ( from a non-Spanish speaking country); ( norteamericano) Yank (colloq & pej), Yankee (colloq & pej)b) (Andes fam) ( rubio) (m) fair-haired boy/man; (f) fair-haired girl/woman* * *= gringo.Nota: Término peyorativo.Ex. 15 mozo
(Sp. model spelled same [móso], of uncertain origin, perhaps related to Basque motz 'blunt' or 'cropped,' originally referring to the short haircut worn by small boys)Clark: 1830s. A young man, but especially one serving as a domestic servant or assistant. Adams and Hendrickson note that in the Southwest it generally refers to an assistant on a pack train. According to Clark, the term originally meant a servant or assistant in general but more recently has come to mean a "toady or overly obsequious employee." The DRAE gives several definitions for mozo, among them a youth and a man who acts as a servant in a household or who is a public servant with little authority. -

19 corral
(Sp. model spelled same [korál], a term of uncertain origin common to Spanish, Catalan, Portuguese, Galician, and Occitan. It is related to Spanish and Portuguese corro 'enclosure' or 'circle of people,' but it is uncertain which of the two terms derives from which. Corominas notes that corral was probably the original term; if so, it derives from Vulgar Latin * curralem 'race track' or 'place where vehicles are enclosed' < Latin currum 'cart')1) DARE: 1829. A pen or enclosure for horses or livestock. Such pens were generally made of wooden posts and slatting or other fencing material, but they could be constructed of rope or adobe walls (Watts notes that the latter was used to protect herds from pillaging Indians).2) Rocky Mountains: 1848. A group of wagons drawn into a circle for defense.3) DARE: 1859. According to a quote included in the DARE, a correll was a hedge built around a campsite to protect travelers from the wind.4) OED: 1847. As a verb, corral means to herd animals into an enclosure, or (5) to draw wagons into a circle.6) OED: 1860. Blevins notes that, by extension from (4), to corral is to gain control of anything. Hendrickson includes a quote from the New York Times (1867) that demonstrates the variety of meanings the term corral had in the West at that time: "If a man is embarrassed in any way, he is 'cor-raled.' Indians 'corral' men on the plains; storms 'corral' tourists. The criminal is 'corraled' in prison, the gambler 'corrals' the dust of the miner." The DRAE references corral as an enclosed, uncovered place in a home or a field that serves as a pen for animals. The additional meanings above are not referenced in Spanish sources, but are extensions of the original meaning.Alternate forms: coral, corel, corell, corrale, correll, coural. -
20 galon
According to Hendrickson, a big horse used for hauling. He quotes Edna Ferber, who suggests that the term is a Mexican adaptation of the American English phrase 'G'long!' used to urge the horses along. However, the Spanish sources listed below provide a much more credible derivation for this term. Sobarzo notes that in Sonora a galán is a lively, graceful, well-proportioned horse. The DRAE defines galán as a good-looking, well-proportioned man who carries himself in an elegant or graceful manner. A Spanish origin for this term is much more plausible, since it was the Mexican/Spanish vaqueros who taught the Anglos cowboying and ranching.
